The One Medicare / One Medical charity of 2011-2012 will be Wellbeing of Women. This charity works to raise money to improve women’s health through Research, Training and Education. The charity has been going for fifty years and  the research they have funded has contributed to many developments we, and our patients, now take for granted, such as; pain relief in child birth, baby scans and screening during pregnancy, IVF, testing for pre-eclampsia, smear tests, HPV vaccine, advances on surgery on babies still in the womb, keyhole surgery for gynaecological problems. They are currently investigating a number of things including a cure for ovarian cancer, the cause of hot flushes, how to treat and prevent endometriosis and how to prevent premature birth.

All proceeds that we make from charity or sponsored events through both companies will go the Wellbeing of Women and a JustGiving page will soon be set up.

If you would like to know more, please visit the Wellbeing Of Women website.

Thank you for all your support!

Support Us This Movember!

It's the time of year again, known to many people as MOvember, when men around the world will be growing moustaches in aid of male cancers. And there's no exception for those at One Medical and One Medicare!

The Movember campaign originally started in Australia, when a group of men taking inspiration from the success of the breast cancer awareness and fund raising campaigns run by woman all over the world, decided to try and do the same for the cancers that affect men.

The funds raised through Movember’s UK campaign benefit the The Prostate Cancer Charity (TPCC), the UK’s leading prostate cancer charity.

Steve, Sam, Dean and Adam at One Medical and One Medicare are all taking part and all of them have so far grown quite impressive moustaches!

So please dig deep for this worthy cause and help us reach our £500 target!

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Stay Safe This Winter:

Responsible Driving

With shorter daylight hours and colder conditions, people can get tired more easily in the winter and sometimes drink more than in summer. Alcohol and tiredness, even in a small measure, do not mix safely with driving. Stay sober or leave the car at home. If you’ve had a few drinks the night before, you could still have alcohol in your bloodstream the next day. So even if you are feeling fine, you could be over the legal limit. In the UK, the limit is 80mg of alcohol for every 100ml blood in your body. The government recommends a limit of 2-3 units a day for women and 3-4 units a day for men. However, the safest option is not to drive if you’re planning to drink and book a taxi or organise a lift.
If you are a cyclist or pedestrian, wear something bright and reflective. You need to be visible to EVERY DRIVER, even those that are not really looking.

Respiratory Infections

There are always more of these infections in winter and this year they include seasonal and swine flu.
If you are invited to have the immunisations, do have the jab as it will protect you and those that come into contact with you. If you work in the health service, or care for vulnerable people, it is really important to be immunised.

The Morning After

The best way to cure a hangover is not to get one. However, taking milk thistle before and after a night out may help to protect your liver if you over induldge. Make sure you eat a big starchy meal before going out or alternate alcoholic with soft drinks and have lots of water before you go to bed.

Don’t Be Alone

Some of us find it difficult to cope on our own. The Samaritans offer a friendly voice at the end of the phone, day or night if you’re feeling a little low and in need of a bit of emotional support. Call 08457 90 90 90 or go online and speak to someone at www.samaritans.org

Fire Safety

Using candles is a lovely way to create a cosy atmosphere, but you should remember never to leave lit candles unattended because of the risk of fire. Think carefully about where they are placed and remember to blow them out before going to bed.

Chillblains

Chillblains are itchy painful lesions on toes that are usually caused by standing around in tight shoes in cold weather. Although they are not serious, they can cause a lot of pain and they are quite difficult to treat so avoid them by walking or cycling instead of standing around. Wear roomy shoes or boots with wollen socks and keep your whole body warm so that warm blood heats your feet from the inside.

Unplanned Pregnancy

Long acting, reversible contraceptives such as Implanon and the coil have joined the range of those available. They are the most reliable and are particularly good for people who have trouble remembering to take a daily, oral contraceptive. Ask in the centre for a full range of options.

NHS health checks

With most peoples New Year resolutions already wavering we are encouraging people not to falter at the first hurdle by offering a full NHS health check to help you achieve your goals.
